Mosaic Making with Amtec:

Family groups designed their own ‘mosaic fragment’ in a sandbox. We used a combination of Roman clay and modern glazed tile tessera. We discussed what types of materials the Romans used for their floors and how they might survive over time – what types of things might threaten their survival.

Finally we lifted, cleaned and mounted our mosaic fragment as a ‘conservation fieldwork’ exercise. The tessera were faced, lifted and turned over, the reverse cleaned and secured to a ‘mortar backing’, then packaged to take home.

Wood Drying Experiment at Amtec

We allowed two pieces of Bronze Age (3,000 years old) wood to air dry during the 3 days of the workshops. A time lapse film was used to capture the extent of distortion and movement which occurs if wood is left untreated and not looked after by a conservator.
