Searching Through the Past
This week sees the culmination of the courses of several different groups of children.

Group One: by Cadie East and Connie Rae.
Today, we saw a group of year six children who were learning how to make clay pots and metal coins. They have been working on this project for six weeks and during that time, they have learnt about plants, bones, woodwork, their ancestors and pottery.
The tutor took two people into another room to show them their work underneath a microscope and the rest of the group drew brilliant pictures and wrote about the work they had been doing.
When we went into the next room, we found the two children and their tutor looking closely at some silver coins underneath a microscope which was shown on a T.V screen to their right. The children were able to identify what type of methods were used to make the coins by looking at the indents on them. After they were finished, a photograph was printed for the children to take home along with their work.
The children explained that they rolled the clay into sausages and piled them on top of each other, wetting the clay throughout this process, to form a pot shape. During the evening, they painted the pots in various colours and used some real gold leaf. When they were finished, the pots ended up looking fantastic!
When asked, the children told us that they had enjoyed this project a lot and that it had been a lot of fun. We asked them if they wanted to live in the past with their ancestors and their answers were definitely no! (We didn't blame them!)
They said that they would miss their playstations, DVD and CD players the most, so we thought, when it comes down to it, they would miss electricity the most!
On the whole, the children seemed very interested in what they were doing and when asked, they could recall a lot of the information they had been taught.
We enjoyed watching and learning about what the children did today and we hope they had as much fun as we did!
