Searching Through the Past

This week sees the culmination of the courses of several different groups of children.

Click here for: Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Group 4

Group Two: By Daniel Latto and Naomi Goodman.

Today's Archaeological Detectives course was led by Ancient Woodworking Technology Specialist
Damian Goodburn.
He brought a lot of interesting tools with him which all of the children on the course had a good look
at. Some of them looked like a simpler form of some of our modern tools.

They were able to use some of the axes and wedges to help Damian split some logs down to make planks for different kinds of furniture etc.

Damian supervised them very carefully and the kids seemed very sensible about using these tools.

He also brought a wooden bench with a vice on one end for gripping bits of wood while they were worked on.
Normally the worker would sit on this and push on the footrest to do the gripping but one of the girls' legs wouldn't reach so Damian helped while she smoothed some of the wood with a spokeshave.
